What is Home-Start?

Home-Start is a programme addressing families who face difficulties or are under pressure and have at least one child of preschool age.  Properly trained volunteer-parents offer on a regular basis (1-2 times a week), at home, support, friendship and practical help for as long as it is needed, in order for the families to overcome their difficulties  preventing thus the appearance of more serious problems. The aim is the improvement of confidence and self-reliance of the families.

Each Home-Start scheme may constitute an independent non governmental, non profit organization or may operate in the context of other non governmental organisations whose aims and philosophy are similar to Home-Start. The scheme is supported by at least one remunerated Coordinator, who is responsible for its organization and operation, one remunerated secretary-administrative assistant and volunteers.

Employer of the staff is the Management Committee, having the full responsibility for the economic viability and successful operation of the scheme. The services of the scheme are offered free of charge and with confidentially.

The first Home-Start scheme was set up in Great Britain in 1973. In a short time, a lot of Home-Start schemes developed in Great Britain and internationally. Today, Home-Start schemes are operating in 23 countries, in the five continents.
